It's December Eve! (And White Christmas Probability)

Hey everyone, can you believe tomorrow is the first day of December?!? Well, I figured I'd get a jump start on the holiday-ish blog posts, so here is some info on whether we are going to have a white Christmas! I went to the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) webpage, and found some details. Here is the probability of having a white christmas for our area, and the probability for each amount of snowfall:

NEW YORK Amount of snowfall
                         1 in. 5 in. 10 in.
   ALBANY 63% 30% 13%
   BINGHAMTON 67% 43% 17%
   BUFFALO 57% 23% 13%
   GLENS FALLS 76% 59% 21%
   MASSENA 77% 47% 23%
   NEW YORK 10% 7% 0%
   POUGHKEEPSIE 45% 28% 7%
   ROCHESTER 60% 23% 3%
   SYRACUSE 70% 47% 20%
   UTICA 71% 46% 18%
   WATERTOWN 69% 41% 21%

Also, NOAA and The Weather Channel had this map on their website:

Everyone, including NOAA, The National Weather Service, and The National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), predicts about a 60-80% chance of having a white Christmas for our area of NY. Yay!

Happy holidays everyone!

Visible Vote Program for Windows!

I have recently been using a program for my blackberry called Visible Vote, which I got for free, and I found out that it is now available for the computer as well! Here is a description of the program off of Visible Vote's website:

Visible Vote allows you to Vote on the Bills your legislators are voting on and it then updates your Legislators with your voting preference. It also allows you to write congress personal letters from your desktop easily, monitor where people in your state stand on the issues, and much more!
  • Sends an overview letter every week to your legislators on how YOU and others in his/her district are voting.
  • Automatically provides feedback to you when senators vote for or against you.
  • Update you via email when a new Bill is coming up for vote.
  • Send a letter to your Legislators through Visible Vote.
  • Track how your legislators are voting on issues you care about.
  • Vote on the same Bills as your legislators.
  • Look at each issue your legislator agrees or disagrees with you on.
  • Check the State Vote Tallies for each bill and see where every State stands on an issue.
  • Look at your legislators voting record on the major legislation.
I personally recommend Visible Vote, it is very neat, and free! To download, click here , or go to the Visible Vote homepage at http://visiblevote.us/windowsinfo.php

Are you going to download Visible Vote?

Crematorium Power Station???

Hey everyone, Shawn here. I read this over on Yahoo! Videos, and thought it was something worth mentioning on the blog. Apparently, over in southern Sweden, a small town is being energy efficient in a very odd and uncommon way. After the ashes have been removed from the furnaces, a crematorium in the town is diverting the 800 degree heat to warm the water supply for the resident's central heating. I, personally, see nothing wrong with doing this. They are just taking the heat and heating the pipes, not the water directly. It may seem a bit out there, but if you think about it, they are saving a hell of a lot of energy by doing this! Watch the quick 1 minute video below from Yahoo!

So what do you think?
Should they be doing this with the crematorium?

Hope to talk again soon!

The Fun Theory

Hey everyone, it's been a little over a week since our last blog post, and I figured I'd check in and see how everything was going.

I recently came across a very interesting site called TheFunTheory.com. Basically, the site is sponsoring a little competition where people create fun ways of making the public have good habits, with a money reward for the best idea. For example: in one submission, they turned a public staircase into a piano, and saw how many people took the stairs instead of the escalator. Click play below to watch the video:

Another cool video that I found on thefuntheory.com is "The World's Deepest Bin"; basically a garbage can that they rigged with a speaker and motion sensor, so when someone throws garbage into it, it sounds like the garbage falls for a long time. Watch the video below:

See, even some of the biggest problems in the world like pollution and obesity can be fixed with something as simple as fun. Maybe there is hope for us still. Now lets get out there and build a staircase piano, get on it OCPJ!

Namaste,

Shawn

Anyone watch Michael Moore's new movie?

Hey everyone, just checking up. I love how our blog is coming out so far, what do you guys think? Anyway,  has anyone seen Michael Moore's new movie, Capitalism A Love Story? I've heard mixed reviews from people. If anyone has been keeping up with the OCPJ emails recently, which is near impossible because there are so many, Greg Winner sent an email out to everyone encouraging them to go watch it. Here is what he said:
To all of you, I strongly recommend that you see the new movie, Capitalism a Love Story.  Once again in my opinion Michael is telling us what we need to know.  See the movie and make your own conclusions.
Other major news sites are giving ratings as well; Users on IMDB.com gave it 2.6 out of 4 stars, Rolling Stone gave it 3.5 out of 4 stars, USA Today gave it 3 out of 4 stars.

The movie has won the little golden lion and the open prize, as well as being nominated for the golden lion. The golden lion is the highest prize given to a film at the Biennale Venice Film Festival. The prize was introduced in 1949 by the organizing committee and is now regarded as one of the film industry's most distinguished prizes.

Want to watch the trailer? Click the video below:

Also, I found this fun little game on Michael Moore's website. It's entitled, The Money To Burn Game. Click Here to open it up in a new window.   EDIT: The game has been removed from Michael's website, and I cannot find it anywhere else

Yours,

Shawn
