Click To Increase Text Size: Normal Big Bigger

There will be an OCPJ meeting on March 11th at 7 PM. It will take place at Claire Einhorn's house on 34 Brittany Dr Middletown NY 10973.

For directions to the event, enter your starting address below:

Also, Vicki has sent an email to the OCPJ mail list with some info on the last meeting and the upcoming one. Read the email below:

Hi, people. We're having another MEETING MARCH 11, 7 pm thursday at clair's, 34 brittany terrace, middletown, 344-5271 for directions. Sorry for late notice, no electricity, no water etc.

Here's a few things we decided at the last meeting: We're going to do a fundraiser for the UU rock tavern in May. We need HELP with this, will give more details at a later time. (and THANKS, maury). They were so good to us in the beginnings of OCPJ (and have continued to be). We hope we can get some commitments from people to help.

We're not going to try to get a bus to DC later this month. If any of you want to do that, tho, of course it is a great idea !

We want to remind you all of the OCPJ website and blog that Shawn Winner set up for us. He has also been a big help with other things throughout the last year and half. ocpj.tk. He put a lot of work into it !! Check it out!

Also, as you all know, we totally support actions of the DA !!!!

We're forwarding a "billionaires for wealth" event info for april 15. Some of you may have gotten this. We support this action and urge whoever wants to, to join in. It's hard to slog thru the email because of the format, but it's reminiscent of "billionaires for bush," which some of you were a part of.
Please note, the aim is not to ANNOY or protest against the teabaggers: it is to "redirect the coverage" ie, the teabaggers' anger is unfortunately misdirected against their own best interest, against the government instead of against the corporations and the wealthiest of the country.

Also, OCPJ donates sums of money to important causes--we appreciate donations, and anyone who actually comes to the meetings finds out to whom or what we donate and how much !!!! (would love to see some of you who we rarely see...)

ALSO, still having "vigil for the fallen" every monday night, firemen's monument, middletown, 7 to 7:30 pm.

-Vicki

I hope many of you attend this meeting!

Verizon Wireless Helps Chile Out

Click To Increase Text Size: Normal Big Bigger

As of February 26th, all calls made to Chile from Verizon Wireless and Verizon home telephones are free.

Dan Mead, chief operating officer of Verizon Wireless, said, “At times of crisis, we spring to action. By acting urgently, we are helping families connect without worrying about cost.”

In addition, Verizon Wireless teams are working with international relief organizations to provide mobile giving options for customers who wish to donate to the earthquake relief efforts. All Verizon Wireless customers who pay a monthly bill, including those formerly with Alltel, may contribute to Chilean earthquake relief efforts via their mobile phones. To make a $10 donation to Habitat for Humanity, text the word “CHILE” to 25383; to make a $10 donation to World Vision, text the word “CHILE” to 20222. Customers will receive a text response to confirm the $10 donation, and 100 percent of customers’ donations will go directly to the relief organization’s efforts to help the victims of the Chilean earthquake. Additional international relief organizations are expected to begin mobile giving campaigns soon.

Verizon Wireless donates the cost of the back-and-forth text messages. Customers will not be charged for the text messages, and the $10 donation will appear on their regular monthly bills.

You may remember that Verizon and many other wireless carriers did this same thing for the earthquake in Haiti, and it is very refreshing to see trusted companies like these working for the good of the people.

My thoughts go out to the Chilean people

Bipartisan Healthcare Summit

Click To Increase Text Size: Normal Big Bigger

The bipartisan health care meeting on February 25th offered something you rarely see in Washington: an open, honest, productive discussion between the political parties. Leaders from across the political spectrum gathered at Blair House to exchange thoughts about an issue that touches all of us: rising health costs and unfair insurance company practices.  Throughout the day, both sides found areas of agreement on important issues like: Preventing waste and fraud in Medicare and Medicaid; Addressing medical malpractice reform; Reforming the insurance market; And giving individuals more choices in coverage, and giving small businesses the opportunity to pool coverage for their employees.

But there were also important areas of disagreement.  The President believes we should set some common sense rules of the road to protect American families and small businesses from insurance company abuses, and he believes that a problem this big cannot be addressed incrementally. And while insuring 30 million people is going to cost money, it’s important to remember that most of this money is going to tax credits that will reduce premiums and help people get better coverage.  And while the President appreciated the participation and input of everyone involved, he doesn’t think we can just scrap a year’s worth of work and start over. The millions of Americans that are suffering can’t afford another year-long debate. There’s too much at stake.

A Merciful God Has Seen Fit to Keep Dick Cheney Healthy for Us All

Click To Increase Text Size: Normal Big Bigger

Former Vice President Dick Cheney — who has previously suffered somewhere between three and nineteen heart attacks — was hospitalized with chest pains yesterday.
Whoa whoa whoa whoa! Don't panic. He appears to be in good condition
Former Vice President Dick Cheney was "feeling good" a day after being hospitalized with chest pains, a source who spoke to Cheney said Tuesday…
Cheney's doctors were evaluating his situation, a family source said. Another source said Cheney, 69, is up and in touch with his family and friends.
Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent, called Cheney's mobility "a good sign."
It's such a load off  my mind to know that Vice President Cheney is "feeling good." It truly is "a good sign."
With a little luck, he'll be up and back to hard-core petitioning for medieval torture practices by the end of the month. God willing.

Biden: The Bermuda Triangle of Politicians

Click To Increase Text Size: Normal Big Bigger

There are few constants in this world. There's Archimedes' constant, Hubble's constant, Planck's constant, and probably most constantly constant of all, Biden's constant: Where Joe Biden goes, stuff goes down in all the wrong ways:

A week ago, while in Vancouver enjoying the Olympics, Biden's motorcade was involved in a chain reaction crash. The incident began when a van carrying two Olympic athletes (figure-skater Peggy Fleming and the former bobsled champion Vonetta Flowers) in the vice presidents motorcade plowed into another vehicle preceding it in the motorcade. That vehicle then crashed into a third motorcade vehicle. The van that started the incident was so badly damaged that it could not be driven away from the accident scene.

The two athletes were treated at a local hospital and released, but as you'll recall this is not the first time Biden's motorcade has been involved in an accident. (Memo to the U.S. Speedskating heroes: I don't care if he's the vice president, if he offers you a ride just tell him you'll walk. Or skate.)

And that was just last week! This week, however, Biden is involved in a more threatening incident...
A man who authorities said apparently suffers from mental illness managed to breach security during the Olympics opening ceremony…
Hold on, hold on, hold on! I know what you're thinking. That's not the part about Joe Biden. The part about Joe Biden is coming up…
A man who authorities said apparently suffers from mental illness managed to breach security during the Olympics opening ceremony and get close to U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, Canadian officials said Wednesday. Police apprehended him about 12 rows away from Biden's section, Lapointe said. He briefly escaped police custody, running into a nearby hallway, but was quickly recaptured, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt. Gregory Gomez del Prado said.
You see? Joe Biden doesn't even need to be personally involved, and stuff get's messed up. He's like a high voltage magnet and the whole world is a computer bank.
The man did not have any weapons on him and did not appear to have criminal intentions, Lapointe said. The man likely suffers from mental illness and won't face any criminal charges, Lapointe added.
Great, as long as the man won't face criminal charges I feel much more reassured...

Stay tuned for next weeks episode of  "Joe Biden: The Bermuda Triangle of Politicians"!
